The Secretary General's office made the following announcement:

The Secretary-General condemns in the strongest possible terms today's suicide bombing at a bakery in Eilat, Israel, which killed three people and wounded another. Such acts of terrorism are a violation of international humanitarian law and can never be justified. The Secretary-General sends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this attack.

The Secretary-General is also alarmed at announcements that further attacks against Israeli civilians are being planned. He calls for swift action by Palestinian security forces to bring to justice those responsible and prevent further attacks.

Except the leaders of the Palestinian security forces supported the attack. It's exactly what the Palestinian president, the "moderate" Mahmoud Abbas, asked for. As we noted on January 11, Israel radio reported that "PA Chairman Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas) said that it is legitimate to turn rifles against the occupation, but Palestinian blood must not be spilled." (More details here.)

The AP reports today that "a tenuous cease-fire took hold in the Gaza Strip."

So Abbas tells Palestinians that they shouldn't kill each other, but that they should only kill Israelis. A cease-fire takes place in Gaza and a bomb goes off in Eilat. Shouldn't Abbas be held responsible? It's exactly as he ordered.
